Now that I have moved an entire house, I have some thoughts! Here are my top moving tips especially if this is your first time!

Start Early

For real! Previously, I had only moved in and out of apartments. If you thought that was hard and you had a lot of stuff….wait until. you have to pack up a whole house! I am so glad I started early! With a toddler running around and being pregnant, I couldn’t just power through a weekend and pack it all up! We had nap times to navigate and my feet would get sore! So we planned it out, I picked a room or area to tackle every evening, and by the time the moving day came, we were all good!

Purge First

It is truly amazing how much junk we acquired in just 5 years of living in our first home! We made several trips to the donation center and to the dump before we even packed a box! No sense in moving stuff we never used in 5 years and won’t be using in the future! This is like the king of all moving tips.

Start In The Least Used Area

We started with the attic! Moved to closets and then to the kitchen for all those serving platters and extra pots and pans! We packed our day-to-day stuff last! No sense in living out of a suitcase until you have to!

Don’t Take Clothes Off Hangers

This tip was a game-changer for me! BY keeping clothes on the hangers and just putting an upside-down trash bag over them, you remove the step of having to hang everything back up when you get to the new house! Work smarter, not harder!

Use Blankets And Towels As Padding

I did purchase some packing paper and thin foam sheets to help pack up kitchen stuff but for everything else, we used our blankets and towels to pack! They have to be relocated to the new house anyway, might as well put them to work on the way!

Hire Professionals

Next time, we are doing this! Period!

Our Moving Experience

Although I would say the actual moving of our things went pretty smoothly, the whole buying/selling process was a nightmare for us! Our first buyers walked because of ridiculous reasons and so about halfway to our closing date we had to put our house back on the market! Talk about stressful! That meant cleaning the house to showing standards again, moving our toddler out of the house again so that it would stay that clean, and waiting for more offers.

Luckily, we got another offer the first day it went back to the market so that was a huge blessing! But that is where the good luck ran out. We had to make several repairs to the house per the contract which was fine but it did end up costing us a decent amount in the end. Then, our closing date got pushed back like 7 times…I kid you not. At this point, we had already switched over all our utilities and had finished moving all of our things, and were living with my MIL. Thank goodness we didn’t have to be wasting money at a hotel! We were so afraid it was all going to fall through again, but finally, about 2 weeks after our closing date was scheduled, we signed and handed over the keys!

We are so grateful things eventually worked out! I am sure there was a reason for all the stress and worry but we made it! And now we plan on never moving again LOL, but kinda not joking.

Thank goodness we were allowed to put all our stuff in the garage of our new house during the process!
