How to Fly with an Infant – Brinley’s First Trip

To say I was nervous to travel with an infant is an understatement. Between balancing her schedule to doing it all solo, I was stressed. I read all the mommy blogs and made sure to plan it out as much as I could. And the experience was actually wonderful! With Brinley being so young it was quite easy, I didn’t have to worry about entertaining her. Here’s how it went down.

First of all, we fly out of CLT which is about an hour and fifteen minutes away from our house. So I made sure to feed her right before we left the house she could get a good nap in on the way. Which she did beautifully! My MIL drove us so we wouldn’t have to worry about parking and riding the shuttle.

She was able to drop us right at the door and I put Brinley in a wrap so I could have both of my hands free. We packed very light because my parents were able to borrow a lot of baby gear from friends for our stay. I had my diaper bag and a carry-on. Both were packed to the brim!

What I Packed

Experience

First thing’s first, find out if the airports you’ll be in have a Mother’s Room! Both CLT and EVV had them! And EVV is a smaller airport. They are private or semi-private rooms that lock where you can feed, change, or just sit with your infant! Both had sinks, changing tables, and comfy chairs! I so appreciated these rooms so I didn’t have to bother with using a nursing cover or find a place to change her diapers! Highly recommend!

You have the option to board with the first group since you have an infant, but I would recommend just either boarding with your assigned group or waiting until last. Less time being in a small seat with a wiggly infant! They gate-checked my carry on so all I had was the diaper bag and B!

For take off and landing you have to remove your infant from your wrap.

A big tip is to nurse or feed or give a paci for take off and landing to help their little ears pop!

Security

Next, research security protocols! The 3 fl oz rule does not apply to breast milk. You are allowed to travel with a reasonable amount of breast milk. I am one to always get stopped at security but with B it was a breeze! I wore her in the wrap the whole time, some places make you take them out. But maybe since I was alone they let me keep her in the wrap. I just put my bags and shoes on the belt and told them I had breast milk in the diaper bag and they had to check that separately. We walked right through and they just felt around the wrap and swabbed my hands. I passed and we went on our way. Took us less than 4 minutes for the whole process. We had the same general experience when flying back home.

That’s all!

Honestly, it was easy and fun to fly with B! It kept me busy and made the travel day go by quickly! It was so neat to watch her discover it all for the first time! The turbulence tickled her belly and her eyes would get really big when it happened! So cute! Everyone was really nice and the whole experience was a lot smoother than I expected it to be!
