When your extremely talented cousin goes to culinary school, you take the opportunity to interview her and get all the advice when it comes to kitchen utensils! We are surrounded by marketing for the next best gadget to help make our lives in the kitchen easier. But are those new and shiny things actually worth your money? Let’s see what Lydia Czoer has to say about it after countless hours in the kitchen!
Introduce yourself (name, major, experience):
Lydia Czoer (18), Johnson and Wales University – Charlotte Campus (starting in fall 2023), Catering Company Preparation Chef at Culinary Innovations by April Boeke (Evansville, Indiana)
Top 3 kitchen utensils you can’t live without:
- Strong Handle, Sharp Chef’s Knife
- Electronic Thermometer
- Rubber Spatula (Scraper)
The most useless kitchen utensil:
Anything that is sold as a “kitchen gadget” such as a Garlic crusher, Fruit slicer, Quesadilla maker, Pancake mix dispenser, etc. which are a waste of time and money.
What kitchen utensils to splurge on:
A good chef’s knife. The stronger the handle the better, the better the metal the less chance of deterioration or chipping into your food. You can either get a sharpening block, or you can go to a kitchen store as most will sharpen your knives.
How often do you need to replace your kitchen utensils:
When replacing your kitchen utensils, you should toss and replace them when you can see deterioration, chipping, cracking any damage. When the cracking, chipping, and splitting start to show, and you continue to use them, there is a chance that you will be consuming the rubber, plastic, and metal, in your food.
Favorite utensil brand:
- Kitchen Aid for a kitchen utensil
- Mercer or Victorinox for knives
If you could create a utensil to make your life in the kitchen easier, what would it do:
Something to help me dry my hands quicker so I can put gloves on more efficiently, and my hands aren’t moist, making it difficult to slip the gloves on.
The most basic utensils every kitchen needs:
Chefs Knife, Wooden Spoons (better than plastic), glass measuring cups, sturdy whisk, kitchen shears (Scissors), good peeler (strong handle-less chance of cutting yourself)
I loved all the hot takes in this interview and this might be your nudge to get your knives sharpened! Until next time!
