How to Make a Burlap Wreath for Christmas

Y’all, I have the most crafty friend and she so graciously agreed to walk us through how to make a special Christmas wreath! Jana is a girl of many, many talents! She is definitely someone you would want to have in your corner! She works in law, can sing, AND plays the violin beautifully! To keep the list going, she even has a super fun podcast with her sister Tara where they review As Seen On Tv products! I love listening every week! You can find that here by the way! I just couldn’t love this girl anymore! Plus, her dog Heidi is the cutest!! Anywho, let’s dive in!

Merry Christmas, everyone!!   Sydney asked if I would like to guest write a “how-to” on making a simple wreath for Christmas and I couldn’t say no.  I have made many wreaths over the last few years, but my most popular ones are my burlap wreaths.  The way I make my burlap wreaths are VERY simple!  There is no twisting needed.  You don’t even need a second set of hands to keep the burlap under control.  So, let’s get started!

What You’ll Need

  • 12-inch Wreath Frame (or larger if you prefer)
  • 5.5-inch x 15-foot burlap rolls (or deco mesh) (x4)
  • Accent Burlap Ribbon/Regular Ribbon
  • Zip Ties
  • Christmas Flowers, Pinecones, etc. (optional)

*The method I use to make my burlap wreaths is called the “bubble method.”  For today’s wreath, I am actually using deco-mesh instead of burlap.  Deco mesh looks and works just like burlap.  Burlap cannot get wet and doesn’t weather well, so if you are placing your wreath somewhere the elements can get to it, you’ll want to swap your burlap for deco mesh.

How to Make Your Wreath

STEP ONE:  Turn your wreath form upside down; gather the end of your burlap/deco mesh into a bunch; stick zip tie through the burlap/deco mesh; secure the zip tie to one of the crossbars on the wreath form, and then cut the tail of the zip tie.  It doesn’t really matter what size zip tie you use since you cut the tail of the zip tie off anyway.  Also, don’t worry, once you’re done, you won’t see any of the zip ties!

STEP TWO: Turn the wreath form back around and start pulling your burlap/deco mesh through the wreath frame starting at the top pulling one “loop” or “bubble” through at a time.  You’ll want to keep your “bubbles” pretty consistent in size.  I believe each of my bubbles is around 4 inches in height, but it depends on how big you want your wreath to be.  Keep in mind as I said earlier, you DO NOT need to twist the burlap/deco mesh once you’ve pulled it through.

You’ll pull the burlap/deco mesh through the top, then the middle, and then bottom – and once you’ve finished with your first three bubbles, you’ll start the process all over again from the top until you’ve completely filled your wreath with the burlap/deco mesh.  Make sure you are holding your bubbles tightly as you continue making the rest of your bubbles.  I have a small hand, but I can generally fit about 9 bubbles in my hand at a time.  Once my hand is full, I let go of all of them and then grab the last three bubbles I created before I start making more.  Once you get the hang of it, the process goes by pretty quickly!

Tip

I generally get four to five sets of bubbles in between each section (12 – 15 bubbles) of the wreath form if that helps.  Also, when you reach the end of your burlap/deco mesh, you’ll attach it to the wreath form the same way you did when you started by bunching the end, sticking the zip tie through the burlap/deco mesh, and securing the zip tie to the wreath form.  Don’t worry if you’re not near a crossbar when you finish.

You can attach the zip tie to any of the bars and it’ll stay in place.  When you flip your wreath over to start again, just make sure you start creating your next bubble where your last roll left off.  So, if you’re pulling from top to bottom and your burlap/deco mesh runs out when after you’ve pulled your top bubble through, start the next roll in the middle and then continue to repeat that process as usual.

STEP THREE:  Now that you have the base of your burlap/deco mesh wreath complete, it’s time to decorate!  If you remember from your empty frame, there were cross bars that divided each section, and that is where we are going to attach our decorative ribbon.  Start by finding a crossbar.  Then take a zip tie and put it underneath the crossbar; gather your accent ribbon; wrap the zip tie around the accent ribbon and tighten.  Do not worry – once you’re finished, you will not see the zip ties!  Repeat that process all the way around the wreath.  Just like working with the burlap/deco mesh, you will keep your accent ribbon attached to the roll until you’ve completely gone around the wreath.

Last Step

STEP FOUR:  This last step is optional and fully up to your creativity!  I’m making this wreath for a return client who purchased a Christmas wreath from me last year and wanted two more to match the one I previously made.  So, I’m sticking different Christmas style flowers, pinecones, and sparky picks into the wreath to try to make it look fuller and more Christmas-like.  You can also add a bow on top or to one of the sides if you’d like!
